A new game development studio is taking shape in the house—Campground, a passionate team of former Playgroundsquad students. United by a shared love for game creation, they turned their internship period into an entrepreneurial journey, founding their studio in 2023. We are a new studio, located in Falun currently working on our first game, Steel Effigy.
Tell us about your background
We are all former students from Playgroundsquad. As students we enjoyed working together on other projects and when it became time for our LIA, we decided to start our own company and start working on our own game instead.
How did you go about starting the company?
One of the first things we did as a group, long before we actually started a company, was design a logo, so we could put it on hoodies. As everyone knows, you're not a real game studio, if you dont have hoodies. So that was fairly early on. We are a group of developers that had very little business experience, so while we were working on the game, we were also receiving business mentoring from Playgroundsquad and their parent company, Tension. With the help of their guidance, we were officially registered as a company in April 2023.
What support and network have you needed
Whenever you start any business, you can never have enough support. We had support coming from multiple different directions. We were extremely fortunate in having amazing mentors from Playgroundsquad and Tension with experience in finance and business management that we were able to call upon. We attended various events where we met and spoke with people from all over the industry and we also got to use many of the contacts we made through our time at Playgroundsquad.
What type of projects do you work on
Currently we are only working on Steel Effigy. Steel Effigy is a PC and Console action game.
Who is your dream client/dream project
That is a difficult question to answer. As a team, all of us have our own opinions and things we enjoy. So do most consumers. As a company trying to create a commercial project, we have to weigh the value of customers above what we want. The reason we started the company in the first place was the team. The people we are working with. So for me, any project I can work with this amazing team on, is my dream project, rather than a specific game.
What are your plans for the future?
Currently all focus is on getting Steel Effigy through development and in front of customers in a state both us and the customers are happy with. After that, we have some interesting ideas we are looking forward to exploring further.
